Stars Matrix resurrections, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have reunited for a photoshoot ahead of the film’s December 22 release. Almost two decades after the release of Matrix revolutions in 2003, the co-stars returned on a press tour for the fourth installment of the hit sci-fi franchise. Both Reeves and Moss have spent the last twenty years cultivating incredibly successful careers in their own right, with the stellar performances of the former in the John wick franchise (slated for release in May 2022) a standout example, and the latter as the no-frills Jeri Hogarth in the Jessica jones Marvel / Netflix series.
The original Matrix The trilogy was a turning point for filmmaking, pushing the boundaries of visual effects with the now iconic slow-motion action scenes depicting ‘bullet time’, as well as blending aspects of its sci-fi, cyberpunk and anime inspirations into one. franchise that always has a huge fan following. Matrix revolutions ended with the deaths of Neo (Reeves) and Trinity (Moss) as they managed to free Zion from the clutches of The Machines, but it was known since 2019 that the two would reprise their roles. Alongside them there will be new faces in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus, replacing Laurence Fishburne as Neo’s mentor and friend, with Neil Patrick Harris in a yet confirmed role.
In an interview with GE this week the co-stars discussed everything from their decades-long friendship that began in the 1990s, their reasons for returning to the franchise, and what it was like working together again. Photographed together, Reeves and Moss wear simple, sleek black outfits against a backdrop of an abandoned room in green hues reminiscent of one in which Reeves’ Neo meets Morpheus, Trinity, and the rest of the Nebuchadnezzar crew at the start of The matrix. Of the trailers and posters released so far, much of the plot remains speculative, which suits the Matrix Title. However, what viewers have shown is a more in-depth exploration of the role of the rabbit, with the most recent Resurrections trailer teasing a meta, a turn from movie to movie. It is still unclear how the deaths of Neo and Trinity will be explained, as well as what role the younger Morpheus version of Abdul-Mateen II will play.
While the project was initially difficult to get started, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. finally decides to give the green light to the continuation. The cultural relevance that The matrix stands today as a testament to its longevity and ability to tell more stories. Fans feverishly discussed the topics and themes explored in the original trilogy, such as gender dysmorphia, the culture of surveillance, as well as the nature of reality itself, and there’s no doubt that The matrix Resurrections will continue the franchise’s keen eye for social commentary.
