HISTORY OF SF OPEN STUDIOS: ArtSpan evolved from SF Open Studios (SFOS), started in 1975 by a small group of enterprising artists who simultaneously opened their studios to the public each year for a weekend to increase accessibility of their work. Following the devastation of the 1989 earthquake, these artists created a strong organization to ensure that SFOS would remain a San Francisco tradition, and in 1991 ArtSpan received its non-profit, tax-exempt status. SFOS has grown exponentially, spanning four weekends, with over 800 participating artists and over 100,000 visitors.
This year, ArtSpan’s SF Open Studios (SFOS) program will run from Thursday, October 20 through Sunday, November 13. Our 48th season includes the return of ArtLaunch, our in-person launch celebration at the SFOS exhibit at SOMArts Cultural Center. ; as well as 4 weekends of studio events hosted by artists.
